saint alexis drawings second cycle 2010

The point of departure for Michael Bastow’s second cycle of Saint Alexis drawings was a large charcoal on canvas drawing of a pregnant woman which was shown at the Zwarte Panter gallery in Antwerp in 2008 along with the first cycle of Saint Alexis drawings. This drawing was subsequently worked up with pastel, gold leaf and collaged tracing paper and incorporated into three monumental drawings in the choir of the chapel.

The installation in the nave of the chapel takes the form of an iconostase - a series of vertical portraits in pastel, gold leaf and collaged tracing paper on rag paper panels. Also hanging in the nave of the chapel is a reworked version of the Maternity panel from the first cycle.

Editions Philias have published a book on the second cycle of Saint Alexis drawings. Entitled ‘La Femme en Majesté’ with a text by Françoise Héritier, it can be purchased on their site www.philias.fr
